Your transport will be waiting for you in the city you arrived in. We advise to arrive the night before so you’re ready to go the next day. We can also recommend accommodation for the first night. After settling at your new home for the next days there will be a welcome dinner to discuss the plans for the week’s hiking. Mestia will be the base for all hikes for the next days. It’s great because you don’t need to carry all your stuff around and after a long day walking you know your warm shower and bed is awaiting you.
Mestia is a picturesque mountain town that enchants visitors with its rich cultural heritage and stunning natural surroundings. Nestled in the heart of the Svaneti region, it offers breathtaking views of the towering Caucasus Mountains and verdant valleys. This charming town seamlessly blends its ancient history—marked by medieval Svan towers and centuries-old churches—with the warmth of Georgian hospitality.
Visitors can embark on scenic hikes through lush forests and alpine meadows, enjoying panoramic vistas of snow-capped peaks. The town’s historic towers, standing tall against the backdrop of rugged mountains, add to Mestia’s allure as a cultural treasure trove. The lively town center is a hub of activity, where local cafés serve traditional Svan cuisine and provide a cozy spot to soak in the atmosphere.
After spending time in Mestia we will go back to the guesthouse where you’ll be staying during the course. We are located in the heart of the beautiful village which is a picturesque drive through the green hills. You can also see a full video tour of the villa on our Instagram page.
When you’re settled we’ll have a welcome dinner so we can get to know each other a bit better and discuss the plans for the rest of the trip. Most evenings we eat at 7pm.
After dinner we like to play a fun board game to break the ice, maybe a sunset walk or take in the beautiful views from the balcony! At 9:30pm it’s always free time so you can chat with new friends, read one of our books or get an early night so you’re full of energy for the next day.
After a big breakfast together at the house, we’ll head out to the beautiful Koruldi Lakes. We’ll make a short stop on the way for a coffee with a view.
The day hike to Koruldi Lakes from Mestia is a stunning adventure that showcases the best of Georgia’s Svaneti region’s natural beauty. Starting from the small but vibrant town of Mestia, known for its medieval watchtowers and picturesque setting, the trail to Koruldi Lakes begins with a steady climb through lush forests and alpine meadows. As you ascend, the path offers increasingly spectacular views of the surrounding Caucasus Mountains, including peaks like Ushba and Tetnuldi, famed for their dramatic silhouettes against the sky.
Georgian cuisine is a vibrant and flavorful reflection of the country’s diverse landscapes and rich cultural heritage. Known for its bold flavors, hearty ingredients, and communal dining style, Georgian food is a true feast for the senses. Central to the cuisine are dishes like khachapuri, a cheese-filled bread that’s considered a national staple, and khinkali, savory dumplings stuffed with spiced meat or vegetables. These are often accompanied by a variety of fresh, flavorful salads, pickles, and sauces, such as tkemali (a tangy plum sauce) and adjika (a spicy red pepper paste).
Georgian meals are often centered around a supra (feast), where numerous dishes are shared among family and friends, highlighting the importance of hospitality in Georgian culture. Pkhali, a spread made from spinach or beet leaves mixed with walnuts and garlic, and lobio, a stewed bean dish, showcase the rich vegetarian traditions of the region. Georgian cuisine also has a long history of winemaking, with wines like Saperavi and Rkatsiteli being popular choices that pair perfectly with the bold flavors of the food. Whether enjoying a simple meal or partaking in a grand feast, Georgian cuisine offers a unique and deeply satisfying culinary experience.
We usually arrive back at the house around 5pm. You have free time until dinner at 7pm. Take time to relax, go for a walk or come and help us in the kitchen if you want to learn some new culinary vocabulary.
After dinner it’s time for our first English lesson. Don’t worry, you’re not back at school, everything is very relaxed and you’ll have the chance to learn something new in a laid back environment. We know that phrasal verbs can be difficult to get your head around so we have created some fun activities to help you use them like native speakers.
After breakfast we head for the day hike in Ushguli, one of the highest continuously inhabited settlements in Europe, offers a truly memorable experience amidst the rugged backdrop of Georgia’s Caucasus Mountains. Starting from this UNESCO World Heritage site, known for its ancient stone towers and traditional Svan architecture, hikers can explore a variety of trails that meander through verdant meadows and along rushing rivers. One popular route leads to the Shkhara Glacier, providing stunning views of Mount Shkhara, Georgia’s highest peak.
Dining in Georgia offers a rich and diverse culinary experience, deeply rooted in the country’s history and traditions. Georgian cuisine is celebrated for its use of fresh, local ingredients and bold flavors, with dishes that are both comforting and vibrant. Khachapuri, a cheese-filled bread, and khinkali, savory dumplings, are staples that showcase the heartiness of Georgian food. For those interested in meats, mtsvadi, skewered and grilled meat, often marinated in local spices, is a must-try.
Seafood lovers will appreciate dishes like chakapuli, a stew made with lamb or veal, fresh tarragon, and a splash of white wine, reflecting the country’s rich culinary diversity. Vegetarians aren’t left out, with options like badrijani, eggplant stuffed with walnut paste, and pkhali, a mix of vegetables and walnut paste, highlighting Georgia’s love for nuts and herbs.
To accompany these dishes, Georgia’s famous wines, especially Saperavi and Rkatsiteli, offer perfect pairings. Additionally, chacha, a traditional grape brandy, provides a strong, warming finish to any meal. Together, these dishes and drinks offer a taste of Georgia’s vibrant culinary heritage, ensuring an unforgettable dining experience.
Starting out, the path takes you through a beautiful forested area, following the Mestiachala River, whose rushing waters accompany you as you walk. The trail is well-marked and gradually ascends through the forest before opening out to more rugged terrain as you approach the glacier. As the trees thin, the full grandeur of the surrounding mountainscape becomes apparent, with the impressive peaks of the Caucasus surrounding you. The final approach to Chalaadi Glacier involves navigating a more rocky and barren landscape, with the glacier itself a striking feature against the stark mountainous backdrop. Standing before the glacier, hikers can appreciate the sheer scale of this natural ice formation, which dramatically underscores the raw beauty of the Georgian wilderness.
In the evening we’ll enjoy our final meal together with a traditional homemade Sunday Roast. Let’s play a board game for some fun and laughter before saying our goodbyes and looking back on a memorable English holiday. We have many board games to choose from so why not take a look through and see which one takes your interest.
Unfortunately all good things must come to an end. After an action packed trip it’s time to leave Mestia.
We will arrange your transport back to the airport or city at whatever time you need to make your flight or train on time.
We will have breakfast as always at 9am or we can make something before this if you have an earlier flight. We ask that you leave your room by 11am but you’re welcome to leave your bags at the house and explore our local village one last time.
We are sure you will have a wonderful experience in Georgia. You will see a mix of nature, history, culture and local life. You will also meet new friends on the course and get more confidence speaking English. Until next time!

Hi! My name is Garry and I founded English Al Fresco in February 2022 because of my passion for teaching. I have been teaching English to adults for many years all across the globe and I have a higher TEFL qualification. I decided to combine teaching with my other great passion, nature.
I think that people learn much quicker out in the fresh air and it's also great for your mental and physical health. I'm originally from a small city called Chester in the north of England and also lived in London for 3 years. I love to travel, I've been to 135 countries. I'm also a keen photographer, cyclist and runner. I look forward to learning more about you on our courses.
Hi, my name is Beth and I'm originally from Yorkshire in the north of England. I have taught English in a variety of countries and enjoy getting to know new students. I have been lucky enough to travel to many different countries and I'm always adding more to my 'to visit list'. In my spare time I enjoy hiking, yoga, surfing and watching live music. I look forward to meeting you in Madeira soon!

Michela Zandonai13/06/2024The experience with English Al Fresco has been positive and I would recommend it to someone who wants to spend a long weekend while speaking English and visiting amazing places in the UK. I chose London for the month of June. I travelled on my own then I was lucky to meet a nice group of people to share the experience with. Reaching the town of Reading was really easy and, at the same time, it is very easy to reach London from Reading, if you want to spend more days there. English Al Fresco’s house is located in Shienfield, a nice village where is possible to take quiet walks before or after a day spent with the group.Nadia De Lorenzo12/06/2024Beautiful experience, very good teachers, I can't wait to repeat itGianni Franzese30/05/2024One of the greatest and interesting experiences of my life. I recently completed an English course with Garry in Edinburgh, and I highly recommend it. The accommodations provided were exceptional. We stayed in a very beautiful house that looked like a scene from an Agatha Christie movie. One of the highlights of the course was the variety of excursions included. These outings were not only educational but also incredibly fun and memorable. I will never forget swimming in the mountain lake and rolling down the hill. I left the course not only with improved English skills but also with new friends and unforgettable experiences. I am looking forward to joining other adventures with English Al Fresco.Silvie P.22/05/2024Great experience, I met a lot of nice people and great hosts.
