The English course in Madeira costs £595 and we make sure you get a lot for your money. The next available course is November 28-December 2. We will be adding more courses next year so message me to register your interest, you won’t want to miss it!

Day 1 - Arrival in Funchal

Arrival in Funchal

MEETING POINT – FUNCHAL AIRPORT

You can arrive at the meeting point at any time after 1pm on the first day and we’ll be waiting for you. We know you all have different flights/trains so we are flexible. If you need help searching for flights just let us know!

If you are flying to Madeira then the only convenient place to fly is Funchal International Airport. From the terminal you can take a short walk to the car park where we’ll be waiting for you.

If you’re arriving in the city a day earlier then you can take a quick bus to the airport or we can arrange a convenient place to meet.

Machico Tour

Machico is a picturesque coastal town that enchants visitors with its historic charm and natural splendor. Nestled on the eastern coast of Madeira, it offers sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean and the lush green hills that surround it. This quaint town beautifully combines its rich history—being the landing site of the island’s first settlers—with modern comforts, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

We will embark on scenic walks along the coastline, enjoying spectacular vistas of the golden sandy beach and the tranquil bay. The Machico Fort adds to the town’s historical allure, standing as a testament to its past as a key defensive outpost. The vibrant marina is a focal point, where colorful boats float in the water, and waterfront cafés offer fresh seafood and local delicacies.

To the house

After spending time in Machico we will drive back to the villa where you’ll be staying during the course. We are located in the beautiful village of Machico which is a picturesque drive through the green hills. You can also see a full video tour of the villa on our Instagram page.

When you’re settled we’ll have a welcome dinner so we can get to know each other a bit better and discuss the plans for the rest of the trip. Most evenings we eat at 7pm.

After dinner we like to play a fun board game to break the ice, maybe a sunset walk or take in the beautiful views from the balcony! At 9:30pm it’s always free time so you can chat with new friends, read one of our books or get an early night so you’re full of energy for the next day.

Day 2 - Pico do Arieiro & Funchal

Pico do Arieiro Hike

After a big breakfast together at the villa, we’ll head out to the beautiful Pico do Arieiro National Park. We’ll make a short stop on the way for a coffee with a view.

We’ll see spectacular mountains with panoramic views. This one is great for Instagram!

Along the way you can marvel at diverse nature, local wildlife and stunning landscapes. There will be a picnic lunch with a great view and some hot tea.

Funchal

After the hike we’ll have time to explore the main town of the island, Funchal. Spending time in this beautiful town is a delightful experience that blends culture, history, and natural beauty. Start by strolling through the vibrant Mercado dos Lavradores, where you can sample fresh tropical fruits and local delicacies. Take a leisurely walk through the charming streets of the Old Town, admiring the colorful door art and historic architecture.

We won’t miss a visit to the lush Monte Palace Tropical Garden, accessible by a scenic cable car ride that offers panoramic views of the city and the bay. As the evening sets in, enjoy a relaxing dinner at a traditional Madeiran restaurant, where you can savor dishes like espada (black scabbard fish) with banana, all while soaking in the warm and inviting atmosphere of Funchal.

Lesson Time

We usually arrive back at the house around 5pm. You have free time until dinner at 7pm. Take time to relax, go for a walk or come and help us in the kitchen if you want to learn some new culinary vocabulary.

After dinner it’s time for our first English lesson. Don’t worry, you’re not back at school, everything is very relaxed and you’ll have the chance to learn something new in a laid back environment. We know that phrasal verbs can be difficult to get your head around so we have created some fun activities to help you use them like native speakers.

Day 3 - Sao Lourenco & Santana

Sao Lourenco

This morning there is an optional early morning swim or yoga session on the beach. Of course you can also just enjoy some extra time in bed 🙂

After breakfast we head for the hike along Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço is a captivating journey that highlights the natural splendour of Madeira’s easternmost peninsula. Beginning from the coastal town of Caniçal, renowned for its fishing heritage and rugged landscapes, the trail meanders along cliffside paths overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. As you trek, panoramic vistas unfold, revealing dramatic cliffs, turquoise waters, and volcanic rock formations that characterize this unique coastal terrain. Keep an eye out for seabirds nesting along the cliffs and the occasional glimpse of dolphins playing in the waves below, adding to the enchantment of this unforgettable hiking experience.

Santana

Visiting the traditional houses in Santana, Madeira, is like stepping into a charming, time-honored slice of the island’s heritage. These iconic triangular thatched-roof houses, known as “casas de colmo,” are a symbol of Madeira’s rural past, dating back to the 16th century. Originally used by farmers as homes and storage, these quaint cottages are constructed with natural materials like straw and wood, providing a unique and rustic aesthetic that stands out against the lush green landscape. Their brightly painted facades—often featuring vivid reds, blues, and whites—add to their picturesque appeal, making Santana one of Madeira’s most photographed spots.

Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a photography lover, or simply looking to experience the authentic charm of Madeira, the traditional houses of Santana offer a fascinating glimpse into the island’s past, set against the backdrop of its stunning natural beauty.

Local Restaurant

Dining in Madeira offers a delightful exploration of the island’s rich culinary traditions, where fresh local ingredients and unique flavors come together to create memorable dishes. A visit to a Madeiran restaurant is not complete without trying iconic foods like espetada, skewered and grilled beef marinated in garlic and Madeira wine, and bolo do caco, a warm, garlic-buttered bread made from sweet potato flour. For those seeking a taste of the sea, dishes like espada com banana—a sweet and savory combination of black scabbard fish and banana—and lapas, grilled limpets with garlic and butter, are must-tries. Hearty options like caldo verde, a kale and chorizo soup, offer comfort and warmth, reflecting the island’s rustic culinary roots.

To complement these dishes, Madeira’s drinks are equally distinctive. Madeira wine, with its rich, complex flavors, is perfect as an aperitif or dessert wine, while poncha—a traditional cocktail made from sugarcane spirit, honey, and citrus juice—offers a refreshing kick. For a lighter option, try a Nikita, a creamy cocktail of beer, pineapple juice, and vanilla ice cream, or enjoy a cold Coral beer, the island’s local brew. Day 4 - Fanal & Porto Muniz

Who wants to swim in beautiful rock pools?

Porto Moniz, a picturesque town on Madeira’s northwest coast, is renowned for its natural beauty and unique attractions. The town’s most iconic feature is its natural lava pools, formed by volcanic rock and filled with crystal-clear seawater, offering a stunning and safe place to swim. Visitors can also explore the Porto Moniz Aquarium, housed in a historic fort, where they can learn about the local marine life. For those who enjoy hiking, the nearby levada walks, such as Levada da Ribeira da Janela, provide breathtaking views of Madeira’s lush landscapes and dramatic coastline.

Fanal

Fanal, located in the northwest of Madeira, is one of the island’s most enchanting and mystical spots. Nestled within the Laurisilva Forest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Fanal is renowned for its ancient laurel trees, some of which are over 500 years old. These gnarled, moss-covered trees stand amidst rolling meadows, often shrouded in a mystical mist that adds an ethereal quality to the landscape. The area feels like a step back in time, offering a tranquil retreat where visitors can connect with nature and experience the island’s unique biodiversity.

A visit to Fanal is a must for nature lovers and photographers alike. The serene beauty of the area is perfect for hiking, with trails that wind through the forest and offer stunning views of the surrounding valleys and mountains. Whether you’re exploring the forest on foot or simply relaxing in the peaceful meadows, Fanal provides a deeply immersive experience in Madeira’s natural world. The combination of ancient trees, misty landscapes, and untouched wilderness makes Fanal one of the most magical and memorable locations on the island.

Paddle Tennis & English Lesson

The locals love Padel Tennis so let’s give it a try (or watching is also possible). We will also do an Al Fresco style English lesson out in the sun. A great way to spend our final evening together.

We are also very flexible on our courses so we will stop and see many other things and are happy to hear your suggestions!

Day 5 - Departure Day

The Final Day

Unfortunately all good things must come to an end. After an action packed trip it’s time to leave Madeira.

We will take you back to the airport at whatever time you need to make your flight or train on time.

We will have breakfast as always at 9am or we can make something before this if you have an earlier flight. We ask that you leave your room by 11am but you’re welcome to leave your bags at the house and explore our local village one last time.

We are sure you will have a wonderful experience in Madeira. You will see a mix of nature, history, culture and local life. You will also meet new friends on the course and get more confidence speaking English. Until next time!

FAQs

What Level of English is Required?

The level isn’t so important. We have small groups and 3 native speakers to help you. Everything is very relaxed and whatever your English level, we can help you to improve. The majority of our guests are around intermediate level.

What Age are your Guests?

The usual age of the groups is 27-49. All adults over 18 are welcome though.

What if I have a Special Diet?

Just let us know what you can and can’t eat and we can order food to suit your dietary preferences.

Do you have Single Rooms?

We have limited single rooms but if you want one please let us know as soon as possible. They are £20 per night (£80 in total for the whole course).

Can I Arrive a Day Early?

We can sometimes accommodate you if arriving earlier or leaving later. There is a cost of £60 for each extra night. Our teachers will not be able to collect you or entertain you as it’s their day off. It’s easy to reach the house by public transport though.

Do you have WiFi?

Yes, WiFi is available throughout the house.

What Should I Bring with me?

We provide towels and bedding. You need some shoes comfortable for walking in. Before the course I will advise about the weather so you can decide which clothes to bring.

Do I need my Passport?

The United Kingdom is no longer part of the European Union after Brexit so everybody will need a passport to travel to Scotland.

Can you Help me get a Visa?

We can write you a visa invitation letter. First you will need to ask the British Embassy where you live which documents you need. The whole process usually takes 4-6 weeks. We already helped many people get visas.

How Often are the Courses?

Courses are every week from Thursday to Monday. You can check availability in the book now section of our website.

What is the Cancellation Policy?

If for some reason you can’t make it on the dates you chose we can transfer your deposit to another date. Please let as know as soon as you can so we can try to replace you. Thanks!

Accommodation

We’re based in Machico, not far from the airport and the capital of Funchal; set in the lush green mountains with a sea view and a short walk to the beach and restaurants. Here, engaging with the warm-hearted locals is as easy as stepping out the door. Plus, the area boasts charming shops and restaurants that you won’t be able to resist.

Usually you share your room with one other person but sometimes it’s possible to get a private room if you ask us in advance. Rooms are very spacious and stylish. It’s a great way to get to know your coursemates better and get the most out of your English speaking practice. We also have beautiful common rooms and a balcony to relax in and a kitchen to use if you need it.

The house offers more than just a good night’s sleep. Feel like kicking back? Our serene garden beckons you to grab a cuppa and relax. Inside, our lounge is your go-to spot, complete with entertainment options and a diverse selection of books and games.

Hi! My name is Garry and I founded English Al Fresco in February 2022 because of my passion for teaching. I have been teaching English to adults for many years all across the globe and I have a higher TEFL qualification. I decided to combine teaching with my other great passion, nature.
I think that people learn much quicker out in the fresh air and it's also great for your mental and physical health. I'm originally from a small city called Chester in the north of England and also lived in London for 3 years. I love to travel, I've been to 135 countries. I'm also a keen photographer, cyclist and runner. I look forward to learning more about you on our courses.

Hi, my name is Beth and I'm originally from Yorkshire in the north of England. I have taught English in a variety of countries and enjoy getting to know new students.   The experience with English Al Fresco has been positive and I would recommend it to someone who wants to spend a long weekend while speaking English and visiting amazing places in the UK.

I chose London for the month of June. I travelled on my own then I was lucky to meet a nice group of people to share the experience with.

Reaching the town of Reading was really easy and, at the same time, it is very easy to reach London from Reading, if you want to spend more days there.

English Al Fresco’s house is located in Shienfield, a nice village where is possible to take quiet walks before or after a day spent with the group.

  Esperienza fantastica! Abbiamo soggiornato in un piccolo villaggio scozzese ed è stato meraviglioso svegliarsi con il canto degli uccellini e fare una passeggiata mattutina in mezzo ai giardini, pieni di fiori e prati verdissimi con le pecore, una vera immersione nel cuore della Scozia! Le stanze sono confortevoli (portate un adattatore per le prese), la colazione è tipica inglese dolce e salata, l’organizzazione è perfetta. Non sono le solite lezioni, ma è una possibilità di conversare in inglese in un gruppo piccolo, imparare i modi di dire dei madrelingua, fare delle passeggiate nei boschi, visitare i castelli scozzesi e Edimburgo.

  If you're looking to improve your English, English Al Fresco offers a well-rounded, enriching program that will exceed your expectations. I recently completed an English course with Garry in Edinburgh, and I highly recommend it.

The accommodations provided were exceptional. We stayed in a very beautiful house that looked like a scene from an Agatha Christie movie.

One of the highlights of the course was the variety of excursions included. These outings were not only educational but also incredibly fun and memorable. I will never forget swimming in the mountain lake and rolling down the hill.
